2.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes New Jersey Second Quake in Days

North Jersey experienced another minor earthquake on the afternoon of August 5, when a 2.7 magnitude quake struck Bergen County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was located in Hillsdale, and the tremor was recorded at exactly 12:11 p.m., as per the official USGS earthquake tracker.

Soon after the quake, local officials and emergency services took to social media to reassure residents and provide updates.

“Many of our residents reported feeling a quick jolt or hearing a loud thump,” wrote Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio on Facebook. “Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries or damage at this time. We understand events like this can be unsettling. Please know the Borough is monitoring the situation and is here to support you if needed.”

The Leonia Police Department also urged residents to only dial 911 for real emergencies, stating in their Facebook post:

“The Bergen County Communications Center is receiving multiple calls about the earthquake, and it is important to keep the telephone lines clear for emergencies.”

Second Quake in Days for Bergen County

This is the second earthquake in recent days to hit the North Jersey region. Just earlier this week, a 3.0 magnitude quake centered in Hasbrouck Heights shook the area and was felt across the Metro New York region, including parts of New Jersey and New York City.

While both earthquakes were relatively minor, they follow a more powerful 4.8 magnitude quake in April 2024, which was felt from Washington D.C. to Boston, affecting much of the Northeast U.S.
